According to the US Census Bureau Americans are on the move to the tune of 36.5 million Americans a year or more older; that’s 12% of the population. it is also 1.4 million more than in 2011. So where is everyone going? The largest state-to-state moves in 2011 were:
- 59,288 from New York to Florida
- 58,992 from California to Texas
- 49,635 from California to Arizona
- 48,815 from New York to New Jersey
- 42,666 from Florida to Georgia
- 41,450 from New Jersey to New York
- 40,114 from California to Nevada
- 38,658 from Georgia to Florida
- 38,421 from California to Washington
- 37,087 from Texas to California
Several of these states had a similar number of state-to-state exchanges. So how does New Mexico stack up in this list? In 2011 we had 61,431 residents move out of the state. The breakdown of New Mexicans moving on:
- 15, 225 New Mexicans moved on to Texas
- 8,797 New Mexicans moved on to Colorado
- 5,904 New Mexican moved on to California
However, even with 61,431 New Mexicans finding new homes outside the Land of Enchantment; 62,130 people decided to make New Mexico their home. The US Census Bureau also found that 64.1% of people moving stayed within the same county.
