Six Tips for Designing Your Bedroom

September 19, 2019 John Kynor Leave a Comment

The purpose of a bedroom is to be a pleasant space for relaxation, recovery, and rest. If your room is poorly designed, however, the environment could dampen your mood and make you uncomfortable. To create a beautiful living space you actually want to spend time in, follow these tips for designing your bedroom.

Have a focal point

To create an intentional and cohesive appearance, your bedroom should have a focal point. Examples of common focal points include large paintings, tapestries, or TVs. You should arrange and design the rest of the furniture in your room around this point. For example, if your focal point is a TV, you could use a stand to mount it on a dresser and point your bed in that direction. Doing so will give your room a unified feel.

Keep your floor plan simple

Your room shouldn’t resemble an obstacle course. Navigating the space should be easy, which often means using a simple floor plan. Focus on creating good circulation throughout the room so that closets, bathrooms, and sleeping areas are easily accessible. To do so, leave at least three feet of space between large pieces of furniture.

Pay attention to lighting

Lighting can make a huge difference in the overall feel of a room. Regardless of the mood you wish to convey, you don’t want your room to appear too dark. An insufficiently lit room can make the space seem dull and even impact your mood. As such, each room should have multiple sources of light, such as an overhead lighting, a desk lamp, and a floor lamp, to create a well-lit environment.

Prioritize storage

People often overlook storage when they’re designing a bedroom, but it’s one of the most important aspects of a functional living space. By having ample storage space, your room will appear larger and more organized due to the decreased clutter. To increase storage space, consider placing a trunk at the foot of your bed or creating an organization system designed specifically to optimize space in your closet.

Don’t over-decorate

Having too many decorations in your room can make it feel cluttered. If every surface and space on your wall is completely covered, consider scaling back. Too many belongings will also make your room hard to clean; unless you’re constantly organizing the room, it can quickly start to look messy. You don’t necessarily have to adopt a minimalist mind-set, but you should try to decrease clutter as much as possible.

Choose proportional furniture

Purchasing furniture that’s proportional to your room’s shape and size will help improve the room’s appearance. For example, if your room is smaller, large or bulky furniture pieces may give it a claustrophobic appearance. Instead, opt for daintier furniture that helps make the space look more open, and try to keep your furniture to a minimum—a bed, nightstand, and dresser. If your room is larger, however, you’ll want to make sure your space doesn’t appear too empty. In this case, you may want to choose larger furniture to prevent your room from looking scattered and vacant.
