I wanted to share this photo I took earlier today at the Medal of Honor Ceremony for Sergeant First Class Leroy Arthur Petry in the East Room of the White House.
A native of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Sergeant First Class Petry received the Medal of Honor for his courageous actions during combat operations against an armed enemy in Paktya, Afghanistan in May, 2008. He is the second living, active duty service member to be awarded the Medal of Honor for actions in Iraq or Afghanistan.
Sometimes I hear people say that America’s best days are behind us. But when I meet extraordinary Americans like Sergeant First Class Petry, I know America’s best days are ahead of us.
We are so very lucky to have men and women like Sergeant First Class Petry serving our country and protecting our freedom. My heart goes out to you for your injuries, and I offer my sincere gratitude to you for your bravery. You are without a doubt a true American Hero!
