There is an astounding “relationship between environmental noise and health effects, including cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, sleep disturbance, tinnitus, and annoyance” according to the World Health Organization. According to the Australian Academy of Science the most obvious impact on health is “ interrupted sleep, with its flow-on effects of tiredness, impaired memory and creativity, impaired judgement and weakened psychomotor skills.
It’s the middle of the night and all you can hear is your neighbors base music pounding through your walls, and you think to yourself ‘How am I ever going to get a good night’s sleep?’
Confront your neighbors
It can be difficult to take the plunge and talk to your neighbors about how loud they are. Yet, the most obvious solution to dealing with the noise pollution is to head over to their place and be direct about your noise concerns.
Making sure you don’t come across as antagonistic is very important. Simply informing them of the high noise level in an inoffensive way is ideal. Many people will not hold this against you and will quickly make the change. But if you have difficult neighbors there are a few other solutions to try.
If your neighbors refuse to quiet down, buying some cheap ear plugs can be a powerful temporary solution. And sometimes the simplest solution is the best. Ear plugs are little foam inserts that go into the ear canal to block noise. You may even try using earmuffs overtop to prevent them from falling out in the night.
There are many types of ear plugs on the market that can actually improve your quality of sleep by muting the noise in the environment. Just remember to put your alarm on a little louder or put it on vibrate so you don’t oversleep.
Noise canceling headphones
If ear plugs aren’t enough to block out the noise, you can always try noise canceling headphones. These are so good at blocking noise they are actually used by construction workers, and people who work with loud industrial equipment.
There are many types you can try from ones that fit over the ears to smaller ones that go into your ears like ear plugs. You shouldn’t be able to hear a thing, so make sure you have a vibrating alarm clock.
Noise dampening curtains
In addition to trying items that fit over or inside of your ears, we also suggest noise dampening curtains. Try switching out your thin, shear curtains for very thick curtains. There are actually curtains on the market that boast effective noise-reducing properties.
Most of the time these curtains are also powerful shades, and are energy efficient. So, in addition to reducing noise they also save you a tremendous amount on your energy bill.
Acoustic Wall Panels
What are acoustic wall panels? Acoustic wall panels are designed to reduce noise and sound in a variety of settings. What are they made of? They can be made of acoustic foam wrapped in fabric or even made out of a metal material.
These are so effective at reducing outside noise that they’re used in movie theaters and musician practice rooms. If they can prevent the melodious sounds coming from drummers practice studios, they can also stop you from hearing your neighbor’s frat party.
White noise machines
Sometimes the only way to overpower the sound of your neighbors is to turn your own sound up. White noise machines produce sounds that are made to calm the listener. They can mask noise pollution by emitting sounds of a bubbling brook, wind blowing through trees, or the sound of rain on a tin roof.
These types of devices are most frequently used in newborn babies’ rooms to keep them asleep, but they work for adults too. White noise machines are so therapeutic that they can even treat the symptoms of tinnitus.
The World Health Organization reports “Excessive noise seriously harms human health and interferes with people’s daily activities at school, at work, at home and during leisure time. It can disturb sleep, cause cardiovascular and psychophysiological effects, reduce performance and provoke annoyance responses and changes in social behavior.” In order to counter these effects on your health, we recommend you try adding at least 2-4 of these techniques for reducing noise pollution.
You will have a great night’s sleep again. Take back the night by trying these tips to reduce noise pollution from obnoxious neighbors.
